and other problems...
Published on March 28, 2008 By Verkinix In Technical

So yeah, 3 times in the last 15 mins either myself or my friend would get minidump issue in MP online. It worked fine the other day when we were playing. Got about 5 hours in and then saved. We came back to it a day later and played about an hour and it worked fine then too. Now we are picking it up again and getting a minidump every few minutes of play. It's really really really annoying! I mean sheesh, I have 4Gigs of RAM and 500 Gigs of HDD space. I dont see the problem! Most background processes are off when I'm playing so there isnt a significant amount of space being taken up.

Another bug I found was with Vasari. Now last time I was playing, I maxed my tech tree. This included the +15% fleet capacity and I had tons of ships, etc. My fleet capacity was around 0 so I had all the ships I could possibly build. Now when I load, I have -560 fleet capacity! So aparently the +15% FC research is no longer functioning (or was functioning improperly before. Either way it needs to get fixed. I cant simply kill off a ship or two to build a simple migrator. I'd have to kill off half of one of my fleets in order to do such things which is absurd. Anyway, those are the issues I've been experiencing lately and I hope they get fixed soon.

Thanks!

I agree with shaft as well. I kinda think im getting the shaft by not see any results for some big issues

The minidumps are Nvidia's fault anyway, and they occur over quite a few other games rather just Sins.

Hence why I use ATI cards, because their driver releases aren't a steaming pile of rubbish, and I don't have to muck around with beta releases to get my card to just work in the first place.

Minidumps are not limited to Nvidia powered systems. I have an ATI card, and I minidump in every single game as well. I'm a Computer Science major, the best I can do right now is to send information to the developers, so they may fix it in a future patch.

same problems since yesterday ... got mini dumps crash after every auto save -.-

Phazon, check out my earlier statement. My buddy actually sold his NVIDIA cards because he thought he was responsible for the MP dumps we were constantly experiencing. It didn't go away. As stated, I am a network engineer, he is a systems engineer, our third player is a desktop guy. We are not spring chickens. He has parsed through the dumps and submitted them repeatedly. We are all running pretty beefy machines all running ATI 3870 cards, all have 4 gigs of ram. We kill all tasks on every machine save for Sins and Ventrillo. We have lowered our detail levels to the minimum required. We have played on a LAN in the same room. We have played on Hamachi. We have played with NAT/port forwarding, we have played with every machine in our respective 'dmz's', we have played on ICO. Everything that is MP crashes. Period. We have burned days on this. Bottom line something is intrinsically wrong with the game. The developers are responsive to a lot of feedback there is no doubt and a lot of people enjoy praising IC, etc. etc. I admit I am somewhat of a fanboy as well of the company's practices but at this point bottom line you have 3 professionals that have tried everything they could and could not get this game stable and it is not playable via Multi two months after release. There is a limit to where you are understanding and begin to be, as a paying customer, very frustrated and angry with your purchase and misguided loyalties. We love this game and cannot play it together in multi and of course there is no single player game but for skirmish so the true value of this game is in multi that is unplayable for a huge portion of the target market. The list of fixes in the next patch are apparently game balance related while a good chunk of the purchasers can't even play Sins. This is extremely frustrating and I'm hoping that the quantity of people upset that they can't play the game will apply enough pressure to change the direction of the troubleshooting. With all of the minidumps that have been submitted I don't see how some form of quick progress to get us working hasn't happened.

To add fuel to the fire, I'm having exactly the same issue. The group (5 players) that I play with have stopped playing the game for this reason! Not sure how something this blatant got past QA. If this is a know issue, which I can't see how it isn't, it is appalling to me to see that a crash is being put aside to balancing issues. A balanced game does me no good if I can't finish it, which I haven't yet. I bought this game the day it was released and I have yet been able to complete a MP game. I bought the game for the sole purpose of playing it as a MP game, and I can't! Even a FAQ acknowledging that there is a problem and stating some sort of activity would be nice. It annoyed me at first how games like Supreme Commander and Company of Heroes released patches on a weekly if not daily basis to address issues, but I have grown to appreciate the proactive effort to provide a stable game. All I hear are crickets over and IC. The fact that something like this has been allowed to go on for two months is ridiculous. To make us wait till 1.1, assuming they even address it at all is deceptive and just plain stupid.

Then you both can get refunds and be on your merry way The fact is, the majority of players have no issues, and in any piece of software there will always be people who do.

It's the nature of the beast, and miracle fixes aren't going to happen overnight

Are you that naive Annatar? Do you honestly think that this problem is limited to the people that have posted in this forum? Its the nature of the beast? Maybe for IC.. If it was happening just to me, sure, I understand. But for every one person that posts to a forum, typically there is a much larger number of people this problem is affecting. Is IC offering to refund my money, because if they are I will take it in a second. I would also like to see this issue addressed. BTW, sitting down and fixing a bug can happen over night, I have done it on many occasions.

Hehe, well, atleast it isnt just me getting the minidumps of death. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm getting Visual Studio errors with no info. That I'm pretty sure is a prob with the nvidia drivers.
on Apr 08, 2008
I agree with annatar, Im just waiting for a fix or a link to 1.02. Annatar is right, this would have been addressed already if this was a majority problem. Although I would appreciate a bit more info on why this is happening, I'll toss my faith in stardock and IC for the time being.

Perhaps a larger number of people don't post, but that doesn't mean hordes of people have issues.

Most people don't have a problem. And the proportion of people with problems is going to be higher here, because most people without problems won't be coming to post.

That's a ridiculous statement Annatar11. Even if it was meant tongue in cheek. Do bugs occur in software? Absolutely! But it is more than a little annoying having IC discuss balancing changes and, hell, there's even a thread about the expansion pack, with no information being relayed about bug fixes.

For the record, I'm one of shaft's friends he is discussing (the one that replaced his NVidia cards (which did stop the BSOD, but not the mini dumps)).

I know IC reads these posts so... Please, IC, you have a group of users (large or small shouldn't really matter) who ardently love this game yet feel neglected by the lack of information and perceived indifference to our multi-player problems. I'm begging you to address the bug issues in some visible fashion for the sake of the community.

Your statements are more ridiculous than mine. Sure there's a thread on the expansion pack. But was it started by Ironclad? Are they boasting about what's going to be in it? Are they saying they're not going to bother fixing anything?

The answer to all of those is 'no'.

They have said, more than once, that they've only been able to identify 2 causes for crashes that need to be fixed on their end, and that they hope to have them fixed for 1.1.

Now, if you think they're purposely putting it off and it's an easy fix, I daresay *that's* ridiculous.

The information has been previously given, even if not to you directly.
